🌾 Farm Calendar Fundraiser:

Help Us Build a New Chicken Coop!

It’s time for our annual Farm Calendar Fundraiser, and this year we have a special goal — to raise $15,000 to cover all costs associated with building a new chicken coop and sustainable chicken keeping for our flock of 20 hens. 🐔

Our current coop has served us well, but it’s showing its age. A new design will improve safety, sustainability, and ease of care for both the animals and the volunteers who help tend to them thus keeping Moss Haven Farm a thriving outdoor classroom for years to come!

Each student can create their own fundraising page for our Zeffy Campaign and fill their Farm Calendar by finding sponsors for each day of the month.

  • Each day’s number equals its donation amount: $1 for Day 1, $2 for Day 2, and so on — up to 31 days for a total of $496 per student.

  • Families with multiple students can combine their efforts by using our 35-day calendar, allowing siblings to fundraise together toward a shared goal of $630.

  • When your child has completed the calendar, they can bring it back for a prize! In addition, any class with 60% participation will earn a party during Farm Class! 🎉
    Calendars are due December 5th.

Every dollar raised goes directly toward the new coop, farm supplies, animal care, garden upkeep, and hands-on learning experiences that make Moss Haven Farm such a special part of our community. 🌱💛

How to set up your own Zeffy campaign

👉 Click here to start your student’s fundraiser!

Step 1: Create your fundraising page

-Go to the main Farm Calendar Fundraiser page on Zeffy.

-Choose “I want to help Fundraise” —> Solo Campaign, enter your student ($496) or family target ($630). You may add a personal profile picture if you choose.

-So the Zeffy account is linked to your personal information, please enter parent first, last name and email address then click “create campaign.”

-Click on “Edit Campaign.” Here you may edit the title of the campaign to reflect what you want seen by the public. Example: “The Cooper Family” or “Sally Z.”

-Add a personal message to your description if you’d like!

Step 2: Share your page

  • Send your personal fundraising link to friends and family by text, email, or social media.
  • Invite them to “sponsor” one or more days on your calendar (for example, $10 for Day 10 or $25 for Day 25). Multiple people can sponsor the same day and people can sponsor multiple days if they choose. The total for 31 days is $496.
  • Let donors know that Zeffy is free for us to use no matter what, tips are optional and do not benefit the farm.
  • Encourage them to leave a message of support for your student when they donate!

Step 3: Keep track of your sponsors

  • Zeffy will automatically update your total as donations come in.
  • You can thank your donors individually or post updates as you fill your calendar.

Step 4: Sibling Families
If your family has multiple students participating, you can combine calendars up to 35 days (instead of 31). That total equals $630 when fully sponsored and all siblings get their own prize.

Step 5: Celebrate your success!
Every student who fills their calendar will help fund farm maintenance, chicken care, and classroom garden lessons.

🐔 Why We’re Raising Funds for a New Chicken Coop

At first glance, our current chicken coop looks just fine, but looks can be deceiving! The coop, which was replaced in 2020, hasn’t held up as we’d hoped. It’s still functional, but the design has created ongoing maintenance challenges and unnecessary stress for both our flock and the families who help care for them.

Several issues have become clear over time:

  • Roofing: The flat roof sags and traps debris, leading to leaks and poor drainage.
  • Lighting: The design blocks too much natural sunlight from reaching the run.
  • Structure: Early signs of wood rot have begun to appear, especially around the base where there’s no proper foundation.
  • Predator Protection: Predator fencing was installed improperly on the inside of the run instead of buried around the outside perimeter, leaving potential weak spots open to coyotes and bobcats.
  • Layout: The nesting boxes and roosts aren’t ideal for the birds’ comfort or health.
  • Maintenance: Cleaning and upkeep are difficult with the current setup.

Despite everyone’s best efforts, it’s become clear that the coop needs a thoughtful redesign to ensure it’s safe, sustainable, and easier to maintain for years to come.

Our vision for the new coop includes:

  • A properly pitched roof for rain runoff and more natural light.
  • A solid foundation to prevent wood rot and extend the life of the structure.
  • Better ventilation and seasonal adaptation for hot summers and cold winters.
  • Electrical access for fans and water heaters to keep conditions comfortable year-round.
  • Improved layout for food, water, and nesting boxes, making care simpler for volunteers and more comfortable for the hens.

The new coop will stay in the same location and footprint but will be built to last, providing a healthier home for our 20 hens and a more sustainable experience for the students and volunteers who care for them.

We’re in the early stages of planning our new chicken coop and welcome your help! If you have coop-design ideas, materials to share, or construction contacts, we’d love to hear from you! Mosshavenfarm@gmail.com

Your support will help us create a safe, efficient, and long-lasting coop that reflects the same care and stewardship we teach our kids every day at Moss Haven Farm.
